Ahhh. My first blog. My first blog post. After reading this you will be wondering in which direction I'm heading with my blog. Mummy style to me means a multitude of things. It's can be fashion, work, of course being a mum and hopefully a little bit of fun. I try not to take life too seriously and hopefully you'll not take this too seriously either. I apologise in advance for bad grammar. Never has been my strength but I hope that it all makes sense!
I'm a mum trying to get her 'mojo' back after the past 3 years being pregnant and/or raising a baby and a toddler. Yes I'm a mum to a 9 mth old and a 2 1/2 year old who somehow has lost all her fashion sense and is trying to get it back. Why? Why is this so important to me? I guess because I've somehow lost my identity. Being in fashion, wearing the latest make up trends was me. Now suddenly being thrust into parenthood I kind have lost my way. It's not that I'm vain. After such a dramatic change in my life as suddenly having children, it was a massive shock to me. Maybe I was naive in my expectations but nonetheless this sudden lifestyle change, I felt that my identity had changed. Even if I wanted to keep my current identity I couldn't. I needed a whole new wardrobe. Extra kilo's I had piled on and they weren't coming off to quickly. Time. Hmmm. I was short of it. My first bub was very needy and rightly so. The poor thing had reflux and barely slept. Many nights we fell asleep together just so he would sleep longer then a 40min stint. For 8 months I was only getting a maximum of 2 hours straight sleep. So any spare time I had certainly wasn't used on shopping or keeping up with the latest trends. Geez my spare time wasn't even spent on housework!! Yep, you guessed it sleep and more sleep! The only problem with this cycle was I slowly lapsed into depression. Luckily I had some fantastic friends and an excellent support network from local community services which got me back on track.
I must say that 3 years "out of the game" and fashion and beauty is not really all that important to me. I mean as long as my littlies where happy and healthy then that was all that should matter right? Well so I thought and then I received the latest Sussan catalogue. But that's a story for another blog post.
Right now I'm going to bring up another issue- "Mummy Hair!!!"
A few days ago a status update from a friend brought up the topic of "mummy hair". The friend was getting a new do and as banter happens on status comments some one said, "Just don't get "mummy hair". It lead us to contemplate what is "mummy hair". The consensus was that mummy hair was when you had your long hair all cut off. I didn't comment. It was a long post. I've had the same hair for most of my life. I grow it long. I dye it blonde then brown, back to blonde then brown. Then once I dye it back to blonde I go and have it all chopped off and somehow the process starts all over again. I don't think short hair symbolises mummy hair though. My blonde short hair had a Cameron Diaz feel about it. I was nowhere near parenthood when I had it done and I thought that I looked pretty damn good. Now if I think back to when I was pregnant with my first bub my long hair was annoying me so I walked into Maurice Mead and asked for the "whatever you think is best cut". Unfortunately unable to think past the just tie it up into a ponytail and that will fix the annoyance problem (damn you pregnancy brain) and not having my regular stylist coz I just walked in (another damn you pregnancy brain) I got a rather puffy, moussey brown style that was definately mummy hair. I went to work next week with an elaborate style of teasing the front and twisting and pinning the sides that no-one was aware that I had a massive hair cut til a few months after (maybe my growing belly was distracting them- who knows but no-one noticed thankfully until it was longer). So I think of Victoria Beckham. Short hair equals yum mum on her. But then I think of Katie Holmes' first attempt at a short style and yes, I'm afraid she had mummy hair. What makes these two woman different is that one looked her age and the other looked years older. Mummy hair means finding a style that makes you look older then you are. So in a few weeks time when I get my newest do I'm hoping that it'll reflect my age or maybe even make me look a few years younger! Wouldn't that be nice?
Have the best day and night,
Mummy Style
